~ Together Anew ~
a Short Story by Me ^v^ finally revised and nice (of 3/9/12)
In the world there were once dragons, great gods that ruled the lands. Along side them special individuals, the dragons' closest companions, helped keep order between them and the human race. These individuals were not known to be of royal blood but for their own special traits specific to their homeland. There were four kingdoms, the Land of Fire, where the hard working lived. As pure as water, in the Water Kingdom, the hearts of the people shone of gold and silver. The Kingdom of Stone held the brave and trustworthy. Lastly, standing high above the others in the mountains was the Air Kingdom, home to creativity.
All was well until, dragons of pure evil from an unknown origin came forth and began to destroy everything. The Kingdoms were thrown into panic. It was then the humans of the world formed armies and alliances with the other kingdoms. Battles raged on for generations and dragons became the common enemy of men. The close friends of the dragons were forgotten.
The world was tainted with darkness, fear, mistrust and hatred. The Air kingdom fell and the armies of Stone and Fire came too late. The only survivor was a little girl. The King of the Stone Kingdom took it upon himself to take care of her. The Fire Lord disapproved and began the war of Fire and Stone. The battles never seemed to end and the little girl of the Air Kingdom grew to be a woman. She was named Ayleth and became a princess among the people of the Stone Kingdom.
The Armageddon between Stone and Fire was on finest day in spring. There was one young man of the Stone Kingdom, who stood fast and would not fall. He came face to face with the Lord of Fire, fought him long and hard until the Fire Lord fell and was slain ending the war. The young man was declare a knight of honor and was addressed by all as Knighten.
There was a feast held at the palace of Stone for the victory over the land of Fire. Princess Ayleth came to Knighten during the dances and asked what troubled him.
He turned to her and said that he was afraid.
Princess Ayleth wanted to but couldn't imagine what he could be afraid of.
Knighten told her she should not worry for him, but rather be concerned for herself.
The princess saw the compassion and truth in his words and could not reply. Before long Knighten turned away and left the dance hall.
Late in the night, after the feast and celebrations ended, the princess awoke by an alarm. The king found her and took her to his chamber for protection. There Knighten came to protect them.
~Stone~
From up top the south wall with his back to the sunrise, Amethyst stood, posed in stone, watching over the humans below. Once the night had fallen he began to gently move his stiff, achy joints, cracking the layer of stone that engulfed him as a statue. He stretched and spread his glossy wings, then he looked out over the Stone Kingdom, eyes open wide. The little town he once new had transformed into an everlasting city. “Beautiful. Absolutely magnificent! If only my brothers could see this!”
Amethyst turned toward the nearest door accessing the wall; there were guards on patrol. Within seconds, Amethyst jumped up and glided to the tower above the door as silent as a butterfly. The guards took no notice to the empty pedestal where he once stood than to lean against it and continue with their conversation. Amethyst let out a quiet sign, then listened intently from the shadows to the guards' conversation.
The guards spoke of a recent battle and a sudden attack. It was all devastating news, and Amethyst could hardly believe such horrible events happened. He wished he had not hid from the humans for so long, in fear of being killed by his once trusted allies, his beloved people. Then he heard of a hero. Amethyst leaned in closer to hear more detail, but in that moment there was an alarm. Bells rang loud, and guards began to swarm in from all the doors. He looked down and saw that the two guards on the wall had spotted him and were aiming their arrows, fixed to shoot. Amethyst had nowhere to escape but to the sky.
Knighten was awakened by the alarms and was immediately summoned to the king’s quarters. He suited up on the run and made it in the nick of time. All the guards were rushing to the walls and began blockading every window and door in the palace.
The king was in the farthest back corner from the high-draped windows in his bedchamber with Princess Ayleth safe in his arms. Everyone was disorganized and in disarray. Whatever they were trying to do, each of them wanted the glory for themselves. Knighten took his position, standing firm behind the bed guarding the window and door from anything that may come toward the king and princess behind him.
A brilliant violet fire lit up the sky, illuminating its source in gold. A large winged dragon, with scales glinted bronze. Knighten watched as the dragon flew, trying to avoid the arrows and spears of the guards above on the walls. Ropes were shot from the towers and caught hold of the dragon. The ropes pulled and the dragon fell. It struggled but it was too late. The dragon made contact with the side of the wall and smashed in the king's bed chamber window with great force.
Splinters of glass flew all around. Knighten had covered the king and the princess, but suffered a deadly blow. A single moment passed, then a deafening shriek rent the air.
~Air~
In the throne room the king informed Princess Ayleth she was to go to the Water Kingdom for her safety. Prince Jura of the Water Kingdom was coming in a few days to escort her. She was distressed about this and didn't want to leave. She entered her room and walked to the open window. The sky was clear and the air was fresh and clean. There was so much chaos the night before. Ayleth couldn't help but worry for Knighten. He is probably hurt, she thought. Maybe dying! As she began to cry, a soft breeze blew over her face and through her hair, slightly ruffling the curtains and drapes on her bed behind her.
There was a louder ruffle in the closet amongst her dresses. As fast as lightning a golden white sliver flew out and went under her bed. Ayleth closed her eyes and breathed in the cool air from outside, letting her tears flow down her cheeks. The little sliver flew again, and under her gown, and began wriggling up her back.
“Oh, don't do that! It tickles!” exclaimed Ayleth as the thin she-dragon slipped through her collar and perched itself on her shoulder. Ayleth smiled a little, “I've told you many times, you’re welcome to fly in here, you don't have to be sneaky around me.”
The little she-dragon gave a sideways nod and gave Ayleth a kind, assuring look. Then climbed atop Ayleth's head, and curled up into an elegant crown, glinting gold in the sunlight.
Ayleth smiled again and wiping away her tears. “Thank you, Raydon. I'm so glad I have you here to comfort me, you're a good friend.”
~Fire~
“The Fire Lord has been slain, your Highness.” announced the past Fire Lord's trusted advisor. “The kingdom is beginning to fall into disorder. Please your highness, unless responsibility was to be taken -”
“Silence!” declare Katherine, Princess, daughter of the late Fire Lord, dishonorable heir to the thorn of the Fire Kingdom. “The Fire Lord declared war upon the Stone Kingdom for his own stupid reason. I was thrown away just because I was not the son he wanted. Advisor, tell me, who was it that slew my father?”
“He is called Knighten, your highness.”
“And who was the whelp that's been hunted all this time? That unnamed wanted bride father fought for?”
“She is Princess Ayleth, your highness.” the advisor had a vague idea where her highness was going with this. I'm stuck with her highness now, thought the advisor. I do hope I'm left out of whatever silly scheme Lady Katherine is coming up with. I don't want to deal with this brat for too long!
“Is something the matter, Advisor?” asked Katherine, turning her head to look at him, as her personal maids put on the finishing touches to her new uniform.
“Not at all, your highness,” replied the advisor, attempting to remove all expression on his face.
“Don't lie. You were the Fire Lord's 'trusted' advisor, and I can clearly tell you are bothered by something. Now tell me.” Katherine was always the type to get what she wanted, when she wanted it and didn't need a reason why. The advisor kept his mouth shut. “Fine. Be that way. You'll just be banished later, seeing as I am the heir to this Kingdom.”
“I beg your pardon, your highness, but upon the Fire Lord's last wishes, You, I am sorry to say, my Lady, were not given the right to be the heir to this kingdom.” hearing the advisor’s words, Katherine began to tremble with rage. “Unless, your highness was to find yourself a groom-”
“SILENCE!” Katherine drew out her sword and held it to the advisor’s throat. Her personal maids had finished their handy work, and there stood Princess Katherine in a red satin riding gown clad in silver body armor. “I am not going to stoop so low as to wed, to be the heir to this kingdom! And so that there is no mistaking it, I am going to prove my worth and put an end to this Ayleth and my father's murderer!”

There was soft soothing music playing. Such a sad lonely song. Knighten got up in the soft earth bed where he had slept and pull a drape away to find a brightly lit cavern.
Knighten fallowed the sound of the harp and quietly waked through a passage. He came to small a room that was a perfect sphere. The walls were painted with landscapes where the sun rose on one side as the moon set on the other.
In the center of the room, there was a stool of solid gold. On the stool sat a man wearing a loyal purple rube, with an elegant harp at his side. As Knighten listen and watched him play, he couldn't help but be drawn in.
Once Knighten had stepped within the doorway, the man jumped up and turned to face him. “Oh! My apologies, I didn't mean to disturb you. How are you feeling?” asked the man.
“I feel fine, thank you. Your music is absolutely beautiful.” Knighten complemented. “May I ask where I am?”
“You received a pretty severe injury the night before, and I apologize for that.” Knighten looked at the man slightly confused. The man continued, “I took you to my home here so to mend your wounds. I couldn't just leave you there after what I did.”
“Wait, a moment,” said Knighten. “'What you did'? The guards were attempting to capture a dragon.”
“Yes and you were caught in the cross fire. I should have left sooner, so the guards would not have found me and there wouldn't have been any conflict.” as the man explained this Knighten saw that for every work the man spoke he would step back and lengthen the distance between them.
He’s a dragon! Knighten remembered the tails his great elder father told him of the mighty beings of the world. his eyes, they’re filled with uncertainty and fear, but why? He also seems lonely.
Knighten put his right hand over his heart and bowed to the man. “Please, do not mistake me for a greedy castle guard, I am known amongst my people as Knighten, an honored knight of the Stone Kingdom.”
Knighten looked up, as the man smiled. “It is a pleaser to meet you, Sir Knighten.” said the man bowing gracefully to Knighten in turn. “I am Amethyst, a Guardian of your home kingdom. The 7th generation of my race, an Elemental Dragon.”
“I am most honored by your presence, Lord Amethyst.” Knighten said flustered.
“Please, address me as Amethyst. I’ve never fancied titles.”
“In that chase,” said Knighten. “Call me Erde.”

First the Air Kingdom falls, now the Fire Lord has been slain. Ulassen flew through the clouds and soaring down to the Mighty Tree, the center of the Water Kingdom. He perched himself on a steady branch and then concealed himself in human form. He climbed the branches of the tree up to the very top; there he could see for miles around.
Looking down he spotted the little troublemaker, a boy named Shaun. Shaun was not aware of Ulassen watching over him and Ulassen liked it that way. He had kept an eye on the boy for a long while. He wished he had the self-confidence to approach Shaun but then, a promise is a promise. Thought Ulassen, I will not disrespect a dying friend’s wishes.
Horns blew from the palace, and Prince Jura headed out the front gate toward the Stone Kingdom. That’s right, remembered Ulassen. The Prince is escorting the fair Princess Ayleth here.
